Moving House: The Security Checklist for Your First Week

You never know how many keys were cut over the life of a property. Treat the handover date as day zero.

Rekey or replace the external locks

Previous owners, tradespeople, cleaners, agents and former tenants may all have had keys. Rekeying the existing cylinders is usually the cheapest way to invalidate every one of them.

Check the doors nobody thinks about

Garage side doors, meter cupboards, gates, sheds and internal garage doors are frequently ignored and frequently the weakest point.

Test every window lock

Many window latches are painted over or broken. Test each one; a latch that does not engage is not a lock.

Consider keying alike

If you now carry four keys for one house, ask whether the cylinders can be keyed alike so a single key opens all external doors.

This guide is general information, not advice about your specific property. If you want a recommendation for your doors, book a security assessment or call us.
