Locked Out? A Calm Checklist Before You Call Anyone

Being locked out is stressful, and stress is exactly what predatory operators rely on. Work through this list before you book anyone.

1. Check every other entry point

Back doors, laundry doors, garage internal doors and ground-floor windows are locked less often than the front door. Do a full circuit of the property before you call.

2. Find out whether a key already exists nearby

A partner, housemate, neighbour, property manager or owners corporation may hold a spare. A five-minute drive is cheaper than any callout.

3. Ask for a price before the technician leaves the depot

A legitimate locksmith can give you a realistic price range over the phone once you describe the door and lock. Be cautious with anyone who quotes an unusually low 'service fee' and refuses to discuss the total.

4. Confirm who is actually attending

Ask for the business name, the address it trades from and the name of the technician. Write it down. You are entitled to an itemised invoice afterwards.

5. Do not let anyone drill straight away

Most residential locks can be opened without damage. If drilling is proposed within the first minute, ask why, and ask what the replacement lock will cost before agreeing.

This guide is general information, not advice about your specific property. If you want a recommendation for your doors, book a security assessment or call us.
